Ever since I started to explore and expand during my time at WDKA,
I began to understand and become aware of the opportunities that come with being an illustration student, which means that a drawing does not always have to be 2D, and there are many ways of illustrating; this can vary from working with fabrics to videography, sculpting, etc. Ever since I started to explore and expand the boundaries of my digital art onto physical materials, I have realized that this is something I want to pursue.
It might sound simple, but this was quite an eye-opening moment for me ( someone who has only drawn 2D for years ). One quote from my teachers over the years stuck with me: “Illustration can be anything’’. Before starting to translate my art onto material last year, I never truly understood their point. Even though I have only explored a little in screen- printing, my perspective on my work and what I can accomplish with it has changed significantly. It opened new doors for me as I had never thought of creating clothes, bags, or prints, which would end with creating an online shop and selling my items. It also opened up a branding side of me that I did not know I had.
It would be a missed opportunity if I did not pursue this further. The concept of Material Months is that I get to choose a (brand new) material every four weeks to experiment with in partnership with Illustration. I came up with this concept to guide me through exploring new materials that I have wanted to try and could benefit my graduation.
With the help of the following materials:
Screenprinting, ceramics, and Tufting, I hope to guide you through this research study and my own personal journey as an artist. However, I would like to begin by explaining how I started and switched my project.
